I introduced a friend at work to Roll For It! this week, and he really liked it. So for that, here's the Card of the Week for this week. An epic card too, which was won by Bernard in a super epic way back on Game Day 36. Legend...
#woodforsheep has been doing the rounds for a long time, and seeing as Catan is a Game Day favourite, here it is in Struggle For Catan version glory. Deserves a place as the first Card of the Week.
Looking at finishing off the year with a bang, October is going to be immense. Two Game Days to kick back and do the Guild Quest, and two Game Days connected in to the night. Halloween will be epic with cake, Trick or Treat, and lots of games.
The Patriot Games meet will happen in either November or December, talking the latter at the moment but there's no fixed date. Then we'll end the year and this season of Game Day on Christmas Day with a family meal and a few games.
The Game Day Player Of The Year will be announced on Halloween. I have already made my choice for the award. Of course, it's one of those special ones made by myself, given to the person who I think did a smashing job at smashing everyone else at games in 2018. Jodie won the award in 2017.
You know I'm going to get too old for this one day and Maverick will have to do all of this. I'm not looking forward to getting old, but I am quite looking forward to him organising his own Game Days.
Before playing and finishing our Dominoes tournament, myself, my granddad (Bernard) and my mother (Diane), all sat down to play Ticket To Ride. In fact it was my mum's first game. This is currently my favourite game, win or lose, I have a good time. When you're on the edge of victory though and the cards don't come out, it is a menace, especially when there's a 20 point card waiting to mess you up.
It was approaching the end of the game when Bernard used his last few trains, sparking the last round. He'd used them all so he wasn't going to get another go anyway, but it meant it was my turn and I still needed 2 black cards to net me 15 points, and to complete my ticket from Los Angeles to Miami. It's a 20 point card, I knew if I didn't get the cards I needed, I'd be losing instead of gaining and I'd lose big time. I took two cards from the deck, there was bugger all on the 5 flat. Nothing appeared to help me. I bagged another 10 points, made no difference. Diane finished her turn, it was time to score.
Bernard came second and finished his two tickets. Diane had won, longest train, and 4 tickets complete, finishing on 100 points. After working it out, if I'd have got those black cards to finish my stupid 20 point ticket, I'd have won by 118. Not only would I have got 15 points for the track, 20 points for the ticket, I would have also got the longest train. Absolute, total, complete, FAIL! So I ended up on 63.
It's incredible how one single card can mess you over so much. Thing is, on one of my turns, I chose to take some more tickets. I decided to keep this one. It's a little bit my own fault, but then again, if I hadn't have tried, I'd have still lost anyway because Diane had been so successful with her tickets.
They both played very well. Bernard has got the hang of the game, and Diane did brilliant on her first try. It was a lot of fun, and as much of a bitch it is, I have a new memory of fail. :) Ticket To Ride is still my favourite game of the moment.
Remember kids. Don't just sit there... Game!
Last week, I joined in something on Instagram called 'Gamer Behind The Games'. It took off quite well. The folks who created it are mentioned below. Here's my original post...
I've decided to join in with the #gamerbehindthegames fun and tell you a little about myself and my family.
I'm Tony, married to my lovely wife Caroline, and we have a player 3 called Maverick. He's only 2 years old but already asking to play Monopoly Junior and Yahtzee.
I've been playing games since I was 2 years old, bit like our little boy. Had to get him to do the same as me. ;) Our favourite games of the moment are Ticket To Ride, Qwirkle, Catan, Camel Up, Roll For It, Risk The Walking Dead, Monopoly Deal, and we just started playing Monopoly Gamer.
Caroline and I have been together for just over 10 years, and because I'm bit of a record keeper, I have game records of every single game we've played. Well over 4000 matches between ourselves now. We used to play a lot of Yahtzee and Magic The Gathering. We keep game books and have little tournaments, and our current game book, we have a jackpot which is growing nicely. At the end of our book, we will have a final and the winner gets the money to buy whatever new board games, winners choice. That's always interesting.
We hold Game Days with friends and/or family. Playing lots of board games. I make hama perler bead awards for the winner of the day, which we all vote on, and the actual beat player gets an award too. I have a website with all the records and photos. Good to look back on and all the players who have attended a Game Day are called the Game Day Guild.
Other than games, I like photography, a range of movies and TV shows. I've been quite the collector of games, anime, manga, and figures in my time.
We like to think we're decent people. We don't drink, smoke or break the law. But I do tend to swear a lot. Must try and stop f****** doing that. Haha.
A lot of our time these days goes on our son, can't wait for him to grow up and play games with us properly. Life is good. :) That's a bit about us anyway. This is a photo I put on my older account a few months ago, but it's a nice one.
Thanks to the folks who started this whole behind the gamer idea. @boardgamebrewery and @boardgamerjen - Great idea. :) Followed you both today.
Thanks for reading. - Tony.
Does anyone play Risk? Great game. If it weren't for this one card coming up for me right at the end of the game last night, I would have lost. Blimey.
Asking the question there of Risk players. I don't think I know a great deal of people who actually indulge themselves in board games. I don't think it's a time issue, it's more like lack of interest in them. The folks who don't care will scroll past this photo, not even read it, and might not even read my status because there's a photo of a game card stuck to it. No matter, everyone is on here as my friend for a reason. :)
Making new friends is harder than you think now the internet has evolved into a society of people who want to make money, or just be more popular with anyone else. Trust has gone out of the window a long time ago. Then there's the whole political arguments, separated groups because of religion or sexuality, there are a lot of ageists too.
This became quite a post. Looking at how things have gone in the world, and some aspects of life, I'm a little sad.
Originally a Facebook post
Every time I go to London and the Namco Funscapre arcade, I get on Speed Of Light and go as fast as I can to get an epic score. I didn't do too badly this time round, not at all. When I turned round, there was a lot of people watching me, a lot of people I didn't know. I still did PROPER RAGE!
Funny thing was, two people tried it after me and still got under 300. Haha.
Our new games record books are in full swing. This post is dedicated to @meeplesweek on Instagram and anyone else who might want to give this a go.
Myself and Caroline have been keeping records of our games, digital and board, since we met. Our books have evolved over time, and more recently I separated Game Day so it's got its own tidy book now.
Game Day has all the records, from today, we've done 22 Game Days. It can involve family and friends, but there are rules. To make an official Game Day, 4+ games have to be played, and at the end of the day to find a champion, we all do a secret vote on who we think played best. There's also the Guild title, I work out who actually did do best, both champions, or champion, gets an award to keep. We also have little championships we have to defend. I post photos of my Hama made awards sometimes.
Our private book contains challenges and tournaments. We have a prize pot which builds up after putting money on our games. Loser puts money in. At the end of the book, we have one big book final over a few games, the winner of the prize pot gets to spend it on new games of their choice. Then we make a new book, play some more. Recently, we'd played our 4000th game since we met nearly 10 years ago.
Our new book has our sons' records in too. Considering he's just turned 2, he has the record on Zombie Dice of 12 straight brains. lol. I lost that one badly.
I recommend all gamers give this a go with friends or family. I also add photos in these books, so they're really good to look back on.
RIP Stephen Hawking. Didn't he do well.
I've grown up looking at the stars, I read his book many years ago, A Brief History of Time, and he was one of the physicists that I enjoyed disagreeing with most, so you could say he pushed me with my theories quite a bit. He's famous, I'm not, but I'm still right. ;)
As much as I was a critic, I also admired the man, he fought and did a lot for the scientific world. He also appeared in Star Trek you know? He will be missed.
I made 4 Tweets earlier, all about the war that soon could be covering the world. Russia, or should I say, Vlad Putin, has stated he has nuclear arms that cannot be stopped and can reach any part of the world. With this, we can certify we're into a brand new cold war.
I don't want to fight, my message isn't to the corrupt governments of Russia, United States, China, North Korea, and even my own petty government I have to deal with here in the UK. I'm talking to the innocent people of the world, the ones who have to deal with stupid wars and rules, pressed upon us by rich corrupt idiots who are supposed to look after the people and their country.
My Tweets say it all...
1. Russia, America, UK, our people who aren't in government are NOT at war. it's a few measly idiots who get to make so called laws who will take the people to war. Stand against what they tell you, we are friends, the governments are using innocent people!
2. We don't want another war, we have learnt so much together, we can communicate and we get along. Russia, China, UK, we are all peaceful people. Don't let a few rich idiots who are supposed to be looking after the people and country send you to your death.
3. War is pointless. Look at history when Christmas came and the English and Germans stopped fighting, played football, exchanged gifts. Those were real people used by a government's war. They should have stopped there.... we don't even have to start fighting.
4. Let the governments of my country, the UK, and the rest of the world's so called leaders in North Korea, US, Russia and China, amongst other war mongering so called leaders, have their own war, let them fight each other. I like a lot of people in other countries, we can have peace.
My Twitter is at twitter.com/TonyoTimes if you wish to come for a chat.
I don't want to make enemies because our governments say we should be enemies. I want to make friends and not hate or kill people from another country. I don't want invasions or nuclear bombs, I just want to live in peace with my family and friends, and have a decent future for my son and future generations, not just for my family, but for everyone's families.
We can have peace. Say no to war.
Whether it's board games or video games, here's a few blogs for you to indulge into.
