There's a lot of news networks in the world, and there's a lot of bloggers. I love politics and other news feeds, and Tonyo Times was originally a mini news paper back in 2005. I'm just going back to my roots with this. My new video is daft, I am being silly, but what's the point in being sensible. The world needs to laugh, let's have some fun. I also have a blue wig I'm not doing anything with.
The second day of 2019, the second day of more health issues. My nose has been running for days, making my sleep suffer and stopping me from doing a lot of things.
The 2nd of January was an important day as I was going to start my first full week on my new job role. Unfortunately, other than the waterfall from my nose, Caroline ended up getting me an ambulance because I had severe chest and back pains, also affecting my head. It was all on the right side so after looking it up, the symptoms were Pleurisy. After the paramedics who came to the house checked me over, they took me to the hospital for more tests. I had three needles stab me to nick my blood, and I even had an X-Ray on my chest. After being cleared, the doctor told me it was Pleurisy. It's easy to sort out when it appears, lots of information online. Still a bit freaky though.
My cold has started to slow down a lot. In fact it stopped running when my heart felt like there was a knife in it. That was weird.
There's one thing I'm not too chuffed about. HR from my work called and said I was supposed to be starting my new job, and they didn't even know I did my first shift the other day. If I wasn't suffering from my chest and back pains, and it felt pretty critical when they decided to call, I'd have told them off for not sending me a contract for 3 weeks. I really wasn't in the mind or health to do that but it still takes the piss a bit.
I'm hoping the 3rd day of 2019 will be a better day. It can't be much worse than the first two. I'm not going to work all week, I know that! I need to rest this off and see how things go next week. Plus, I want my contract!
So this was my Wednesday evening. Stuck in a hospital for hours having tests. I'm happy it's nothing too serious, but it's still something I don't really need in life. At least there's a tree in the Bassetlaw Hospital car park. Nice. Always good. Cheerful.
Before I got stabbed with an invisible blade to my chest, I did manage to play with Maverick's Lego Duplo. I'm not obsessed with Game Day! No really, I'm not. REALLY!!!! ;)
The beginning of 2019. What a bitch. The first day of a new year is one that's supposed to be filled with happiness and new hopes, not hallucinating Go Jetters and Paw Patrol episodes. It's not supposed to start like this!
I'm typing my first blog of the year with my nose like a waterfall, so I have tissue shoved up it to stop it running everywhere, it's been like that since Monday. I keep changing the tissue, don't worry. I've used so many tissues, Kleenex are opening another factory.
My brain is also pulsing like I have a headache, but no pain. So after all of this illness, and getting patches of sleep, nothing solid because I can't, I think I'm off work again. I was only off for a week with a massive cold just before Christmas, and I went back still poorly. Maybe that was my mistake?? Anyway, it's back and even worse. At least the hallucinations have stopped, that's about the only good thing now.
What's worse about being ill and being off work. Not just losing money, that's why we do it, but in this case it's something else. I just got a new job role, just now, started this week. So I'm letting them down, but with the work I do, there's no way I can go in. Most companies don't understand that people do actually get ill though, it can't be helped, we're only human.
Because I can't exactly do much other than watch TV and use my laptop, I'm going to write this blog about the farce that's my employment and a quick natter about board games. This will take some time to write but I'm not able to sleep, so sod it. Let's go...
I applied for a new job within the company I work for. Can't say too much because they have notices everywhere stating that we have to be careful what we put online. Funny that, pinning things up with warnings, especially considering that their Twitter feed has employees within work all over it, and I'm pretty sure most of them don't know they're on Twitter connected to the company. I know I wouldn't be pleased.
Anyway, I applied for this job. I heard nothing for weeks. I enquired with HR if they even got it, which didn't mean a great deal. Then a couple of weeks before Christmas, I got an interview. Yep, I went to work and found out there and then I was having it, so 4 hours notice. I didn't think the interview went that well, but I found out a few days later, just by passing the manager of the department I was trying to work for, that I had got the job. First I heard about it, in fact, they wanted me to start 4 days later. If I hadn't have seen her by chance, I wouldn't have even known. I asked my manager to sort it out because it was short notice, and asked to start on 2nd of January. New year, new start. Makes total sense, and it also gives them time to send me the contract.
Then I was off work with this damn cold. Tap nose, weak, felt like utter crap. Made for a God damn awful Christmas. A week later, still with a really bad cough and only feeling about 65% active, I went back to work, mainly to find out why my contract hadn't been sent and find out what the hell was going on. I confirmed I was starting on the 2nd of January, which I was happy with. The next day, I goes to work, still feeling crappy, and they told me they wanted me to start on the 29th of December. Now I was half alright with this, but again.... AGAIN! Short notice. Less than 24 hours notice and I'd be starting my new job. It was going to be my last shift of the week so I decided to agree, and get a heads up of my new job role. Still, no contract available!
I went in to work, learnt a few things, everyone was really nice. There's a ton of stuff to learn but I'm quite excited about that. But the one niggle was about the contract. When would I get it? Will I actually agree with the terms and conditions on said contract? Well, it's still in question because I still haven't got it!
Today is the day I was supposed to start in my new department, and yet, here I am with no contract to sign. Everything about the process from applying, the interview, the notice they wanted me to start, the notice they gave me to actually start, and the fact I still have no contract. It's been a farce from the beginning!
I doubt very much I will be able to work tonight, unless they want my nose and eyes dripping everywhere. Even then, I don't feel strong enough to leave the house, let alone work for half a day. I do feel sorry because I'm the sort of person who hates letting people down. Being ill at a time like this, really bad. I can't do anything about it though really, like I said, I'm only human. Being off twice in three weeks though, they'll probably decide to give me a warning or something. Yeah, Happy New Year!
We were supposed to have a Game Day today, that had to be cancelled because of this cold or flu, or whatever it is. For one, I really don't feel up to it. Second and most importantly, I don't want to give this to anyone else.
I'll tell you something. Me cancelling a Game Day, trust me, if anything confirms I'm ill, it's me cancelling a Game Day. We were all looking forward to it, and again, I'm feeling more gutted than ever about letting people down.
We did have a Game Day on New Year's Eve to finish Game Day for 2018. That's when my nose started running and I began to feel weak yet again. It wasn't until the evening when the dam broke. I really must stop talking about the activeness of my poorly nose! Shut up Tony, for God's sake.
Right, so, we had a Game Day, it wasn't anything amazing, it pretty much ended up being me verses my niece and nephew. It was too loud, and kids will be kids. We only just managed to fulfil the rules to make it an official Day, and we also got 4 brand new games added to the list. That's always nice. I feel like buying Operation now. Screw Monopoly Junior though, I own that and it'll always be a bad idea for a game.
My Niece won the awards, the Day ended, and then it was time to relax for the evening with a cup of tea. Well at least I thought I would. It ended up being Lemsip, cough sweets and Vicks. At least we started to learn Dead Of Winter, and even in that my dog died.
The last award for Game Day in 2018 was supposed to be nice, gold and shiny. Had it made for a while and this was a good opportunity to put it up for a win. Because of a conversation with my Niece though, I ended up making an award with poo on it. There's nothing original about the perler poo, pixel poo, Hama poo, however you'd like to name it, but it did end up being won by the person who's fault it was. Yep, good win.
There was some dodgy games going on. The Operation game I played, and lost at, well if it weren't for my son and nephew running all over the place, and constantly knocking me, I might have done better? The buzz happens, you have to pass the tweezers to a child, even if it wasn't fair. My other excuse is, I have a cold... and I like it when kids don't whine, so pass them the bloody tweezers!
Monopoly Junior was as dodgy as ever. I went third, and because of some unlucky dice rolls, I didn't even buy a single property. My bankruptcy ended the game pretty fast, which I'll never complain about because I hate Monopoly Junior.
We did get a few games of Top Trumps Match: Harry Potter in, that wasn't too bad. I don't think there's any skill in that game whatsoever, but it's a nice looking game.
2019 is here then. It has to be better than last year. I doubt I'll get run over again, but knowing my luck, I'll get hit by a meteorite instead. Oh well, I get injured again, it'll mean more Game Days while I'm recovering. That's what happened in March last year when some dickhead knocked me off of my bike and ruined my back for 2 months. Gaming helped a lot, thanks to friends and family for the support when I needed it most.
So what's happening with games this year? Loads. I'm off to the UK Games Expo in May for the first time. Dedicated board gaming convention. Hoping to play a bunch of new stuff, should be good. I'm off to the London MCM Comic Con a week before as well, only for a day. The whole thing combined with other plans... Adventure Week 4. That's something we do every 2 years, and it's always been in May.
There should be quite a few Game Days, and now I've got Game Day Online up and running, I'm sure there will be quite a few of those too.
I've typed a lot, I've sneezed a lot, and I've deaf again. Even after going on and on here in the biggest blog I've written in years, I'm still dreading laying down for sleep. The tablets don't seem to be working this time. I hate taking tablets! No point in going to the Doctor's either. They just say I should carry on with what I'm taking. Have you tried getting an appointment with a doctor these days? It's impossible. If you go with something like this, they look at you as if you're stupid.
Okies, time to post this and replace the fluids I lost while typing this up. I'm so out of practice writing blogs. I don't think they should be this long. It's longer than a book!
Remember folks, keep gaming, keep happy, and keep away from me while I'm diseased.
Here's my dead dog in Dead of Winter. Bloody useless hound!!!
It's been a while since I wrote a blog. Since my last one, we've had quite a few Game Days. The last one held in Sheffield last week, at Patriot Games, was our 57th Day. Really good, 8 of us having a fun casual day, and Julian did the double. Been giving a lot of double awards out recently, and long may it continue.
I have two or three more Game Days planned this year, and then we're looking at the third season starting in January 2019. I have a few extra things going on from Christmas Day actually, which will be the last Day of 2018, and I'll be topping it off with a prize draw. Got some nice prizes in that.
As I type, I only have two prizes for the Christmas Day draw. The main one is a new award, and will be an annual draw top prize. The Guild 1-Up. The winner can take it to a 2019 Game Day, and if they feel the need, will use it to give themself an extra vote, have a battle with whoever got the most votes for the Game Day award to try and claim that award, or even be a total dick and take the Game Day award, no votes needed. The winner can even save it for an extra entry in to the prize draw in December 2019. Should be interesting.
Another prize I have so far is a small presentation pack of the Guild awards from this year, last year, and the upcoming 2019 award. That's a nice little touch, nothing huge but fun.
Other prizes I'm looking at will be sweets. Yummy.
I'll try and make more blogs from 2019 as well, would like to do something after every Game Day, it would make sense. Here's hoping I get some time in my busy life to get it done.
I've just had this week off work, booked it a few weeks ago, the plan was simple. Relax, family and friends time, and plenty of games.
On Wednesday (3rd October), Alison and Jodie came round. We played some epic games as we had a Game Day. We finished our Guild Quest which started back in May. One of the last games was Catan, always a pleasure to play, but this one was over 2 hours long. Alison won nicely, but I have to have a moan. I sat there for an hour as the dice ignored me. It's one of those placement games and it's right at the beginning of the game that matters. I wish I'd put my settlement in another location, but you just don't know how the dice are going to be. The robber was heavily active in this one too. Bloody number 7.
We started a Ticket To Ride league, Caroline won the first game. The Ticket To Ride franchise is going to play a big role in Game Day leagues from now on. Once we finish this, we're going to Europe. After that, who knows? We'll be doing a new place every league. My friend Ewa should be hopefully joining us next year as well for future leagues since I brainwashed her in to playing the game. We just have to wait until our kids go to school, more time then to game.
The funniest game was Codenames. Caroline and Jodie took on me and Alison in two games. The first game was looking bad for us, and in the end we could have won if my final guess was correct. Of course, it couldn't have been any worse, I found the assassin. The second game, Caroline and Jodie were having the same issue, and they had a final guess to either win or the lose the game. Caroline only went and picked their final winning card. Talk about two nasty games of Codenames, well for our team at least.
Caroline won the Game Day award and then she had to play against Jodie at a quick game of Black Jack for the Guild award, which Jodie won.
Thursday was bit of a relax day. We took Maverick out to a kids activity place where we used the slide a lot, and kicked some footballs about, I had more fun doing that in a closed off area than Maverick. Hehe.
Friday, we took Mave to see his cousin's. He had a lot of fun, and I forced a Game Day on them. I wasn't sure how my bro and sister-in-law would manage seeing as it was their first time doing votes and stuff. Felt like I forced it on them a bit. But they enjoyed it, introduced Yahtzee to Game Day, as Matthew plays it a fair amount with me. Caroline won the Game Day again and I got the Guild. A really good day.
Saturday, got a few odd jobs done and then went to Ewa's house so Maverick could spend some time with her kids, and I could show her and her husband Carcassonne. We also played a game of Ticket To Ride. Ewa has learnt well, that or her tickets were amazing. She beat us all. Good games, company, and cake.
Good holidays always have to come to an end. It was a nice few days where I didn't have to go to work. Now I'm planning some awesome things for my birthday next year. Got to start looking at Adventure Week 4 next year as well.
Next week is Game Days 48, 49 and 50. Three in a row. I'll blog it after it happens, but these are going to be awesome.
I introduced a friend at work to Roll For It! this week, and he really liked it. So for that, here's the Card of the Week for this week. An epic card too, which was won by Bernard in a super epic way back on Game Day 36. Legend...
#woodforsheep has been doing the rounds for a long time, and seeing as Catan is a Game Day favourite, here it is in Struggle For Catan version glory. Deserves a place as the first Card of the Week.
Looking at finishing off the year with a bang, October is going to be immense. Two Game Days to kick back and do the Guild Quest, and two Game Days connected in to the night. Halloween will be epic with cake, Trick or Treat, and lots of games.
The Patriot Games meet will happen in either November or December, talking the latter at the moment but there's no fixed date. Then we'll end the year and this season of Game Day on Christmas Day with a family meal and a few games.
The Game Day Player Of The Year will be announced on Halloween. I have already made my choice for the award. Of course, it's one of those special ones made by myself, given to the person who I think did a smashing job at smashing everyone else at games in 2018. Jodie won the award in 2017.
You know I'm going to get too old for this one day and Maverick will have to do all of this. I'm not looking forward to getting old, but I am quite looking forward to him organising his own Game Days.
Before playing and finishing our Dominoes tournament, myself, my granddad (Bernard) and my mother (Diane), all sat down to play Ticket To Ride. In fact it was my mum's first game. This is currently my favourite game, win or lose, I have a good time. When you're on the edge of victory though and the cards don't come out, it is a menace, especially when there's a 20 point card waiting to mess you up.
It was approaching the end of the game when Bernard used his last few trains, sparking the last round. He'd used them all so he wasn't going to get another go anyway, but it meant it was my turn and I still needed 2 black cards to net me 15 points, and to complete my ticket from Los Angeles to Miami. It's a 20 point card, I knew if I didn't get the cards I needed, I'd be losing instead of gaining and I'd lose big time. I took two cards from the deck, there was bugger all on the 5 flat. Nothing appeared to help me. I bagged another 10 points, made no difference. Diane finished her turn, it was time to score.
Bernard came second and finished his two tickets. Diane had won, longest train, and 4 tickets complete, finishing on 100 points. After working it out, if I'd have got those black cards to finish my stupid 20 point ticket, I'd have won by 118. Not only would I have got 15 points for the track, 20 points for the ticket, I would have also got the longest train. Absolute, total, complete, FAIL! So I ended up on 63.
It's incredible how one single card can mess you over so much. Thing is, on one of my turns, I chose to take some more tickets. I decided to keep this one. It's a little bit my own fault, but then again, if I hadn't have tried, I'd have still lost anyway because Diane had been so successful with her tickets.
They both played very well. Bernard has got the hang of the game, and Diane did brilliant on her first try. It was a lot of fun, and as much of a bitch it is, I have a new memory of fail. :) Ticket To Ride is still my favourite game of the moment.
Remember kids. Don't just sit there... Game!
Last week, I joined in something on Instagram called 'Gamer Behind The Games'. It took off quite well. The folks who created it are mentioned below. Here's my original post...
I've decided to join in with the #gamerbehindthegames fun and tell you a little about myself and my family.
I'm Tony, married to my lovely wife Caroline, and we have a player 3 called Maverick. He's only 2 years old but already asking to play Monopoly Junior and Yahtzee.
I've been playing games since I was 2 years old, bit like our little boy. Had to get him to do the same as me. ;) Our favourite games of the moment are Ticket To Ride, Qwirkle, Catan, Camel Up, Roll For It, Risk The Walking Dead, Monopoly Deal, and we just started playing Monopoly Gamer.
Caroline and I have been together for just over 10 years, and because I'm bit of a record keeper, I have game records of every single game we've played. Well over 4000 matches between ourselves now. We used to play a lot of Yahtzee and Magic The Gathering. We keep game books and have little tournaments, and our current game book, we have a jackpot which is growing nicely. At the end of our book, we will have a final and the winner gets the money to buy whatever new board games, winners choice. That's always interesting.
We hold Game Days with friends and/or family. Playing lots of board games. I make hama perler bead awards for the winner of the day, which we all vote on, and the actual beat player gets an award too. I have a website with all the records and photos. Good to look back on and all the players who have attended a Game Day are called the Game Day Guild.
Other than games, I like photography, a range of movies and TV shows. I've been quite the collector of games, anime, manga, and figures in my time.
We like to think we're decent people. We don't drink, smoke or break the law. But I do tend to swear a lot. Must try and stop f****** doing that. Haha.
A lot of our time these days goes on our son, can't wait for him to grow up and play games with us properly. Life is good. :) That's a bit about us anyway. This is a photo I put on my older account a few months ago, but it's a nice one.
Thanks to the folks who started this whole behind the gamer idea. @boardgamebrewery and @boardgamerjen - Great idea. :) Followed you both today.
Thanks for reading. - Tony.
Whether it's board games or video games, here's a few blogs for you to indulge into.
